How Much Does It Cost to Have Someone Build a Shopify Website? What You Pay and What You Keep Paying
Quick answer: Having someone build a Shopify website costs anything from $100 to $10,000 on Shopify's own Partner Directory, where store-build listings show prices such as "Starting from $100", "$575-$799" and "Starting from $10000". The spread is real, and scope moves it, not the platform. The build fee is paid once. From month one you also carry the running bill: a US store on Basic billed yearly pays $29 a month plus 2.9% + $0.30 per online card sale. For a 20-product store selling $1,000 a month, that is $768 a year before any build fee. Read on 28 September 2026.
What do Shopify Partners charge to build a store?
Between $100 and $10,000 in starting prices, if you hire through Shopify's own directory. Shopify does not build stores itself. It sends owners to independent partners, and their listings carry prices.
The Partner Directory's "Store build or redesign" filter showed "1 - 16 of 4735 partners" on 28 September 2026. Each card has a field called "Price range for services". You "Communicate directly with the partner, set your project terms, and start collaborating."
| Partner (location) | Displayed price | What the figure covers |
|---|---|---|
| XeeDevelopers (Manchester, UK) | "Starting from $100" | All their services |
| LassoART Designs (Indore, India) | "$150-$300" | All their services |
| RootSyntax Technologies (Saint Petersburg, US) | "$300-$5000" | All their services |
| Charleston WebBuilder (Summerville, US) | "$575-$799" | All their services |
| RNR Digital Media Group LLC (Thornwood, US) | "Starting from $975" | All their services |
| Hippie Chick Design (Sherman, US) | "Starting from $1200" | All their services |
| Adex Labs (profile page) | "Store build or redesign Starting at $1800" | Store build only |
| IT-Geeks (profile page) | "Store build or redesign Starting at $10000" | Store build only |
Read the third column first. The price on a directory card is set by the partner for everything it sells, not for your project. Only profile pages break prices down by service.
That is the finding. The $100 to $10,000 spread quoted everywhere is real, because Shopify's own directory shows it. But the platform does not cause it. The same Basic plan sits under a $100 build and a $10,000 build. What changes is the work: pages, products, apps, data moved from an old site, and design time.
Why does one Shopify build cost $100 and another $10,000?
Because a "store build" can mean a theme set up with your logo, or a full redesign with migration and custom work. Scope sets the price. Shopify publishes no price floor, minimum or average for partner work.
Look at what the top of the range sells. IT-Geeks, a Platinum Partner, prices "Store migration Starting at $10000" and "SEO Starting at $1000" as separate lines. Adex Labs notes on its profile: "We are working with the clients who are having Shopify, Advanced Shopify or Plus plans." Those partners size their work for larger stores.
At the bottom, a $100 starting price covers a narrow task. No partner page read here says what its lowest price includes, and many service lines read "Contact for pricing". The only fair comparison is the same written scope sent to each partner.
Shopify's Plus pricing page names the lines that move a build. On other costs it says: "None, but if you need custom development you should factor a Shopify Plus Partners into your budget. Other optional costs are one-time theme purchases and any third-party apps you need."
What are the three ways to get a Shopify store built?
Set up a paid theme yourself, hire a directory freelancer or small studio, or hire a larger agency. Each route has a published price anchor, and they sit far apart.
| Route | Published price anchor | What you get | Fits when |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY with a paid theme | $100 to $500, one-time | A finished design you fill in | Small catalogue, standard layout |
| Directory freelancer or studio | "Starting from $100" to "Starting from $1500" | Setup, theme changes, product entry | Ordinary scope, no time to do it |
| Larger agency | "Starting at $1800" to "Starting at $10000" | Redesign, migration, custom work | Large catalogue or an old site to move |
A paid theme is the cheapest way to buy design. The Theme Store listed 24 free themes and 1,257 paid ones on 28 September 2026, from $100 to $500. The Impulse theme page states the terms: "Keep it forever. One-time payment, lifetime license for your store. No expiration." It adds: "Play before you pay. Customize until you love it. Only pay when you publish."
A theme is not a build. You still enter products, write pages, set up payments, shipping and tax, and connect the domain. For a small catalogue that is often the whole job.

How much does a Shopify developer cost per hour?
No source publishes a freelance Shopify hourly rate, and this article will not invent one. The nearest official anchor is a wage: the US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median web developer wage at $44.54 an hour in May 2025.
The BLS handbook page on web developers and digital designers says: "The median annual wage for web developers was $92,650 in May 2025." These are employee wages. A freelancer or agency must also cover overhead, unbilled time, tools and self-employment tax, so the bill rate sits above the wage. BLS does not publish freelance bill rates.
The wage still helps you sanity-check a quote. The hours below are illustrative, not a fact about any real build.
| BLS median wage, May 2025 | 40 hours | 80 hours | 120 hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Web developers, $44.54 an hour | $1,781.60 | $3,563.20 | $5,344.80 |
| Web and interface designers, $50.00 an hour | $2,000.00 | $4,000.00 | $6,000.00 |
A quote far below the 40-hour line is a small job or a lower-cost location. Ask which.
What should a Shopify build scope list?
Every deliverable, in numbers: pages, products imported, apps, integrations, migration, training and handover. A scope turns a "Starting from" figure into a price you can compare.
| Scope line | What to write down | Why it moves the price |
|---|---|---|
| Pages | Each page by name, including policies | Each custom page is design time |
| Products | Count, variants, who writes copy and supplies photos | Entry work grows with the catalogue |
| Theme | Free, paid (which one), or custom | Paid is $100 to $500; custom is quoted |
| Apps | Each app by name, its price, who pays | Paid apps bill you after launch |
| Integrations | Payments, shipping, tax, email, accounting | Each one needs setup and testing |
| Migration | Products, customers, orders, old URLs, from where | Priced as its own service |
| Training and handover | Sessions, account ownership, access removal, settings list | Time after build; protects you at the end |
Two lines need extra words. Migration first: IT-Geeks and Adex Labs price it separately, at "Starting at $10000" and "Starting at $2000". If you have an old site, name the platform and what must move.
Then apps. Shopify's free trial help page says: "If you add apps to your Shopify store during your free trial period, then any app-related charges are included on your next invoice." An app a developer installs during the build lands on your bill.
Work with me
Does your catalogue need a developer, or would a paid theme do the job?
Most small catalogues do not need a custom build. Tell me what you sell, roughly how many products and variants you have, and the three or four things the store must do on launch day, such as local delivery, wholesale prices or bookings. I will look at it for free and tell you plainly if a paid theme and an afternoon of setup will cover it. If so, you keep the money and I point you at the settings that matter.
If the store does need work, you get a written scope first: pages, products entered, apps and who pays for each, integrations, migration, training and handover. The quote is a fixed price against that document, so you can compare it with anyone else's line by line. The store, the theme licence and the domain stay in your name from the first day. Reach me through the contact form, or on WhatsApp if a launch date is close.

What does a 20-product Shopify store cost in year one?
About $768 in running costs if you set it up yourself on a free theme, and $1,968 if a partner charging Hippie Chick Design's displayed "Starting from $1200" builds it. The running bill is the same either way.
Assumptions: a US store with 20 products, Basic billed yearly, Shopify Payments, 20 online orders of $50 a month, under 10,000 marketing emails a month, and a domain you already own, connected rather than bought through Shopify.
The running bill
- Plan: Basic billed yearly, $29 a month. For the year: $29 x 12 = $348.
- Card fees on $1,000 of sales: $1,000 x 2.9% = $29, plus 20 x $0.30 = $6. Total $35 a month.
- Running month: $29 + $35 = $64.
- Running year: $64 x 12 = $768.
- Email: under the 10,000 free sends a month, so $0.
- Domain: connected, which Shopify lists as "No additional cost from Shopify". Your registrar bills its renewal separately.
- Apps: $0 with free Shopify apps such as Shopify Flow, Inbox and Forms. Shopify publishes no average app spend.
The build fee, three ways
- DIY on a free theme: build fee $0. Year one: $768.
- DIY on a paid theme: $768 plus a one-time $100 to $500 licence.
- Directory partner at Hippie Chick Design's displayed starting price: $1,200 + $768 = $1,968.
- Agency at IT-Geeks' store-build starting price: $10,000 for the build alone, about 13 times the running year of $768.
Year two is $768 on every route, because the build fee does not repeat and the running bill does. Billing monthly adds $10 a month ($39 against $29).
What do you keep paying after the Shopify build is finished?
The plan, card fees on every sale, paid apps, email above the free allowance, and the domain. They start at launch and do not stop when the developer leaves. The full arithmetic at three sales levels is in the companion piece on what a Shopify store costs to keep open each month.
| Line | What Shopify's pages say | When it bills |
|---|---|---|
| Plan | Basic $39 monthly or $29 billed yearly | Every cycle |
| Card fees | 2.9% + $0.30 per online sale on Basic | Every sale |
| Own payment gateway | Shopify adds 2% on Basic, on top of the gateway's fee | Every sale |
| Paid apps | Set by each app; no average published | Monthly, even while paused |
| 10,000 free a month, then $1 per 1,000 | Above the allowance | |
| Staff logins | Not on Basic; Grow allows 5 | Through a higher plan |
Two lines catch owners after a build. The first is staff. Shopify's help page on the Basic plan says: "The Basic plan doesn't support adding staff accounts to your store." If your team needs separate logins, the build has pushed you to Grow at $79 a month billed yearly.
The second is apps. The pausing help page says: "All your apps remain active after you pause your store. If you want to pause your apps, then you need to cancel them individually." Five paid apps from a developer are five bills you cancel one by one.
Shopify's pricing page adds: "There are no setup fees on any of our plans." Any setup fee you pay goes to the person doing the work.
Who owns the Shopify store, the theme and the domain?
You should own all three, in your own name, and the build agreement should say so. Shopify's pages settle part of this; get the rest in writing.
The store. Some actions are open only to the owner: the pausing page lists "must be store owner" as a requirement, and the deactivation help page says: "For security reasons, Shopify Support can't deactivate your store for you." The pages read here do not describe how a developer's access works. So agree in writing that the account is in your name and email, and that the developer's access ends at handover.
The theme. The deactivation page says: "Themes are licensed only to the store you originally buy it for. You can contact Shopify Support to transfer the license to another Shopify store you own." Buy it on your store, with your card.
The domain. Buy it yourself and connect it. Shopify's connect-vs-transfer page says: "Your domain provider remains the registrar, and you continue to manage your domain settings, billing, and renewals through that provider." Domains bought through Shopify "typically start at $9 USD/year"; Shopify does not publish the price of a .com.
What should you ask before hiring a Shopify developer?
Ask what the fixed price covers, line by line, and what happens to your accounts when the work ends.
- Is this a fixed price for the written scope, or an estimate?
- Which theme, free or paid, and will it be bought on my store?
- Which apps will you install, and what does each cost me after launch?
- Does my team need staff logins, and so a plan above Basic?
- Will the store account and domain be in my name from the first day?
- How many products will you enter, and who supplies copy and photos?
- What training do I get, when is your access removed, and do I get a written settings list?
Shopify gives you a route if something goes wrong. Partners "are required to follow the Partner Program Agreement", and owners can file a "Report a Partner violation form". The directory tiers partners Select, Plus, Premier and Platinum, "based on multiple factors, including their history of experience and proven success on Shopify."
What are the red flags in a Shopify build quote?
A price with no written scope, a store or domain set up in the developer's name, and apps nobody listed. Each leaves you paying for something you cannot see.
- A number with no scope. A "Starting from" figure is a floor for a whole menu of services.
- The account or domain in their name. Owner-only actions and renewals then depend on someone else.
- A theme bought on another store. The licence belongs to that store.
- Paid apps with no list. They keep billing after launch, even while paused.
- An outside payment gateway with no reason given. Shopify adds 2% on Basic on top of the gateway's fee.
- Promises about sales or rankings. A build fee buys a store, not results.
"Contact for pricing" is not a red flag by itself. It means the written scope comes first.
How do Shopify partner prices compare with Wix and Webflow partners?
Shopify's directory starts lower than Webflow's featured partners and overlaps with Wix's marketplace. All three show partner-set starting prices, not quotes.
| Directory | Listings | Displayed starting prices seen |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Partner Directory, store build | 4735 partners | "Starting from $100" to "Starting from $10000" |
| Wix Marketplace, web design | "1,782 professionals found" | "Starting at $50" to "Starting at $500" |
| Webflow Certified Partners, featured | Featured cards only | "Starting at $2,500 USD" to "Starting at $50,000 USD" |
The Webflow cards are featured Premium and Enterprise partners, so they skew high. No platform publishes a typical price to build a site. For costs across builders and hosting, see the guide to what a small business website costs to build and keep online.
How this was researched
Every price and quotation was read on 28 September 2026 from Shopify's Partner Directory and the IT-Geeks and Adex Labs profiles, Shopify's pricing, Plus pricing, domains and Theme Store pages, the Shopify help center pages linked above, the BLS handbook page and May 2025 wage data for web developers, the Wix Marketplace and the Webflow Certified Partners directory.
Pages were fetched as plain HTML, with a headless browser where needed. Every fetch left from Bangladesh. Shopify shows discounted local prices outside the US, so Shopify's US prices were read from Shopify's own pricing page as captured by the Internet Archive on 27 September 2026. Help center pages are not priced by location and were read live. The directory's default order also seemed to follow location, with a Dhaka partner first, so the listings are real but their order is not what a US visitor sees.
Not verified: what any partner includes at its starting price, the price of a .com bought through Shopify, any paid app's price, and any freelance hourly rate, which BLS does not publish. No store was built, nothing was bought, no partner was contacted, and nothing was benchmarked for this article. The author's role here is the careful reader of the fine print.
Verdict: how much should you pay someone to build a Shopify website?
Pay for scope, not for the platform. Shopify's own Partner Directory shows store-build starting prices from $100 to $10,000, and the same Basic plan sits under both ends. What you buy is pages, products, apps, migration and design time. Write those down, send the same scope to two or three partners, and compare fixed prices line by line.
Then budget the part that never ends. For a 20-product US store selling $1,000 a month, the running bill is $768 a year on Basic billed yearly. It repeats every year; the build fee does not.
The cheapest design you can buy is a paid theme at $100 to $500, licensed to your store for good. For a small catalogue with a standard layout, a theme and a careful afternoon of setup may be all you need. Hire when the scope has migration, custom features or a catalogue you cannot enter yourself. Either way, keep the store, the theme and the domain in your own name.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to have someone build a Shopify website?
On Shopify's own Partner Directory, store-build listings showed starting prices from $100 to $10,000 on 28 September 2026, for example "Starting from $100", "$575-$799" and "Starting at $10000". These are partner-set starting prices, not quotes. The final price depends on the pages, products, apps, migration and design work in a written scope.
How much should I pay someone to build a Shopify website?
A fixed price for a written scope, compared across two or three partners. Shopify publishes no floor, minimum or average for partner work. For a small catalogue with a standard layout, a paid theme at $100 to $500 plus your own setup time may be enough, with no build fee at all.
How much does a Shopify developer cost per hour?
No official source publishes a freelance Shopify hourly rate. The nearest anchor is the BLS median wage for US web developers, $44.54 an hour in May 2025. That is an employee wage. A freelance or agency bill rate sits above it, because it must cover overhead, unbilled time, tools and self-employment tax.
What is the Shopify website design cost with a theme?
Shopify's Theme Store listed 24 free themes and 1,257 paid ones on 28 September 2026, priced from $100 to $500. A paid theme is a one-time payment; the Impulse page says "One-time payment, lifetime license for your store." You can customise it before paying and pay only when you publish.
How much does a Shopify expert cost?
Each partner in Shopify's Partner Directory sets its own price. On 28 September 2026 the store-build filter held 4735 partners, with displayed starting prices from $100 to $10,000, and many service lines read "Contact for pricing". Shopify does not sell build services itself and publishes no starting price of its own.
How much do people charge to build a Shopify website?
Displayed prices on Shopify's directory included "Starting from $100", "$300-$5000", "$575-$799", "Starting from $975" and "Starting from $1200". A card price covers all of a partner's services. Profile pages break it down, for example "Store build or redesign Starting at $1800" for Adex Labs.
What do I keep paying after my Shopify store is built?
The plan, card fees and any paid apps, from launch onward. A US store on Basic pays $29 a month billed yearly or $39 billed monthly, plus 2.9% + $0.30 per online card sale. Email is free up to 10,000 sends a month, then $1 per 1,000. Paid apps keep billing while a store is paused.
Does Shopify charge a setup fee to build a store?
No. Shopify's pricing page says: "There are no setup fees on any of our plans." Any setup or build fee goes to the person doing the work. Shopify charges the plan, card fees and optional extras such as a domain bought through it, which it says "typically start at $9 USD/year".
Can a Shopify developer use a theme bought for another store?
Not without a transfer. Shopify's help page says: "Themes are licensed only to the store you originally buy it for. You can contact Shopify Support to transfer the license to another Shopify store you own." Buy the theme on your own store with your own card, so the licence stays with you.
Should the Shopify store and domain be in my name or the developer's?
Yours. Some Shopify actions, such as pausing a store, are open only to the store owner. A domain you buy yourself and connect stays with your registrar, where you control billing and renewals. Shopify's pages do not describe developer access in detail, so put ownership and handover in the written agreement.
Transparency: every price and quotation in this article was read on 28 September 2026 from Shopify's Partner Directory and partner profiles, Shopify's pricing, Plus pricing, domains and Theme Store pages, the Shopify help center, the BLS handbook and wage data, the Wix Marketplace and the Webflow Certified Partners directory. Where a source publishes nothing, such as a freelance hourly rate or what a partner includes at its starting price, this article says so rather than substituting an estimate.
